What are Some Special Precautions to Take While Using Diindolylmethane Supplements?

Diindolylmethane (DIM) is developed in the human body upon the consumption of plant substances like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables that contain it. According to scientists, these vegetables have and anticarcinogenic benefits for the human body due to the presence of DIM and an associated chemical known as indole-3-carbinol. It is available as a supplement these days and is consumed for various health benefits, but there are some important precautions to take during the use of them:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

When consumed in small quantities through foods, DIM can possibly be safe. However, when having as supplements, it is important not to consume it in large amounts. There is insufficient information about whether it is safe to have Diindolylmethane in large amounts during breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Hormone-sensitive conditions

Uterine fibroids, uterine cancer, endometriosis, ovarian cancer or breast cancer are some of the conditions where the intake of Diindolylmethane supplements might make them act similar to estrogen. Due to this reason there are some worries that such hormone-sensitive health problems might get worsened upon having DIM supplements.

Research and development also indicates that the intake of these supplements might work against estrogen. This might be protective against cancers that are hormone-dependent. It is important to be on the safe side and not use DIM supplements, if you are suffering from any hormone-sensitive problem, until further information is available about them.

Children

It is important not to help children use these supplements every day. The ingestion of DIM Diindolylmethane, through the consumption of cruciferous vegetables like Brussels sprouts, is possibly safe for children. But having too much of these in the form of daily supplements might be unsafe for them. Little information is available about the safety of DIM, when administered to children in larger amounts.
